Footwork
Footwork is used to avoid punches and create the correct distance for offloading your punches onto your opponent.
Good Boxing Footwork is a key skill and should be used to get within range of your opponent as well as helping you to avoid punches from your opponent. Start with these basics:
1. Position your feet within the correct range to maximise punch impact
2. Using footwork to create counters such as stepping to an angle to avoid punches while offloading punches on your opponent
Boxing Stance is a very important part of any Boxer's set up, here are some key things to keep in mind:
1. Feet should be spread slightly more than shoulder width apart
2. Right-handed fighter (orthodox fighter) should lead with the left foot
3. Left-handed fighter (southpaw) should lead with the right foot
4. Knees should be slightly bent
5. Both feet should be parallel
6. Lean slightly more weight on your front foot, with your body leaning forward
Guard / Defence
Your Boxing Guard will help to define you as a fighter - try some of these top tips:
- Both hands should be raised above the chin and just below the eyes.
- Make fists, keeping your thumb outside and below your knuckles.
- In your boxing stance, your knuckles should be facing the sky.
- Your elbows should be kept tucked in into the side of your ribs.
1. Fists tight to your face. A tight guard minimises punch impact.
2. Parrying- Blocking shots with the hands.
3. Slipping – Slipping to the side of punches allows them to pass by you.
4. Dropping – Dropping the head allows punches go over your head.
