Footwork
Good Boxing Footwork is a key skill and should be used to get within range of your opponent as well as helping you to avoid punches from your opponent, start with these basics:
- 1. Position your feet within the correct range punches to maximise impact
- 2. Using footwork to create counters such as stepping to an angle to avoid punches while offloading punches on your opponent
Guard / Defence
Your Boxing Guard will help to define you as a fighter, try some of these top tips:
- 1. Both hands should be raised above the chin and just below the eyes
- 2. Make fists, keeping your thumb outside and below your knuckles
- 3. In your boxing stance, your knuckles should be facing the sky
- 4. Your elbows should be kept tucked in into the side of your ribs
- Your fists should be deviated at a slight angle while your knuckles are facing the sky
Boxing Defence is the art of Blocking or Defending against punches coming from your opponent, things to bear in mind include:
- 1. Tight face shield guard
- 2. Keeping your hands tight and fists facing forward to minimise the impact by absorbing the punches on your guard.
- 3. Parrying- blocking shots with the hands
- 4. Slipping – Slipping to the sides of punches, allowing them to pass by you
- 5. Dropping – dropping the head to allow punches go over your head
Punches
Knowing how to throw the correct punches and throwing them from the best position to create maximum impact is key.
The jab is key boxing punch and generally gets used much more than any other punches. The Jab is used to set up punches, score points, hurt an opponent, keep an opponent away. It has the longest reach and can be used without
Lead Jab (Left hand for a right-handed fighter, right hand for a left-handed fighter)
This includes the different variety of punches that can be thrown with the lead hand and the backhand including:

Lead Pick hook
Lead uppercut
Sweep lead uppercut
Corkscrew ( Only apples to the lead hand )
Backhand

Overhand ( Only applies to the backhand )
